The Rise of Electronic Books

Posted in E Books by Darryl Vensel on December 15, 2011

Reading is not just an enjoyable pastime, but a rewarding and self-enriching hobby as well. A person who likes to read various publications and books across a range of subjects can easily carry on a conversation regarding different interests. Reading stimulates the mind, exposes your thinking to different philosophies and perspectives, and also challenges the mind to translate words into mental images and illustrations, unlike film or television which already feed the images to the brain.

In recent years, reading has experienced a major upheaval as the Internet age has given rise to digitized books, or e-books, and a plethora of different ways people now consume reading material. Bookstores are reporting decreased sales of paperbacks and hardbound books, while e-book readers such as the Kindle and Nook have become successful as consumers shift to e-books. Not surprisingly, tablets, smartphones and notebook computers also work with e-books.

Almost all newspapers today have an online edition as readers prefer to read their news on the Internet instead of the traditional morning paper. Also, online news editions can be updated regularly especially during coverage of a breaking news story, which is one major advantage for online news. Magazines typically have Web editions also.

It really should not be surprising that reading habits and trends have shifted towards online consumption. As the Internet has permeated daily transactions, business processes, and even forms of learning like language tutorials, cooking courses or the best online guitar lessons, the convenience and mobility offered by e-books was inevitable. You can have an entire library of various books fit in your digital reader for easy access while on a plane or sitting by the beach.

Many traditionalists have lamented the digitization of reading, and blame the Internet on less reading habits among the youth today. However, others contend that the youth’s quick adoption of anything Web-related or tech-savvy can actually be a catalyst for popularizing reading as a hobby again. When online users read news articles or research online, they are still reading and consuming information, even though it is not in printed form. E-books can be used to get today’s generation to develop a love for reading, if used the right way.

American Short Stories Authors

Posted in New Fiction by Clayton Strege on November 15, 2011

Many people enjoy reading short stories from books, magazines, and collections, and short stories online have also become popular. Some people view short stories as less important and easier to write than novels, but this isn’t necessarily true. In fact, it takes a certain set of writing skills to create a good short story. Short fiction is much more concentrated than novels, for instance. Penning short stories is not for those without advanced writing skills, and in fact, some of the world’s best writers have written short stories, including famous American authors.

Many American authors are known for their novels and their short stories. These include greats like Ernest Hemingway, John Steinbeck, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Eudora Welty, J.D. Salinger, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ray Bradbury, Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., John Updike, Stephen King, and William Faulkner. There are also several American authors who are known mainly for the works of short fiction. These include O. Henry, Flannery O’Connor, Washington Irving, and the master of the short story, Edgar Allan Poe.

Many readers prefer short stories over novels because they can get to the “good part” more quickly. They don’t have to invest hours or days in a plot like they would with a novel.  Because American short stories are so popular, many have been made into movies.

Ways to Improve Your Child’s Reading Comprehension

Posted in Literature by Allan Riddles on October 3, 2011

There are many ways to help your children reach their full potential.  Improving his reading comprehension can be a wonderful and valuable asset that will stay with him throughout his life.  There are plenty of tips to help your little reader become successful.

Having new readers, as well as not so new readers, read aloud can improve reading comprehension because this will make your child slow down while reading.  Hearing the words said out loud can also help with comprehension.  It’s great to take turns reading back and forth to each other.

Another good way to improve reading comprehension is providing books on your child’s reading level.  Books that are above his reading level will be too difficult.  There may be a lot of vocabulary that your reader doesn’t understand if the book is not on his reading level.  This will hinder his ability to comprehend because he will be to focused on trying to figure out how to say words he does not recognize and what they mean.

Becoming a fluid reader helps with reading comprehension.  After a book is read once, don’t assume that it’s of no use anymore.  Have your child read it again.  This will help his confidence and he will be able to decode the words faster each time.

If your child is having trouble reading on grade level, try building his vocabulary.  Flash cards are really great.  Make sure the definitions are short and simple.  You may need to get a grade level appropriate vocabulary list from your child’s teacher.

It is very beneficial when you let your children read outside of school.  Let them read books that interests them.  The more interesting the topic is to your child, the more likely he is to want to read and understand what is written.  He will also be more likely to want to read the book again!

It’s a good idea to ask your kid questions about the material he’s reading.  You’ll want to ask questions before, during, and after.  Before questions can be something like, “Why did you choose this book?”  A during question could be, “How is your book? Who is the main character?”  An example of an after question is, “Can you tell me what happened in the book?  Who was your favorite character? “

I hope these tips will help you help the little reader in your life.

Fairy Figurine Collectibles and Gifts

Posted in Blog by Nelson Axtell on September 26, 2011

Add a dash of magic to your home accents with a fairy figurine. Who can resist a fairy’s beautiful wings and playful attitude. If you want a touch of whimsy and find angel figurines too spiritual or religious, then a spirited fairy figurine might be just the thing. Fairies are reputed for getting into all sorts of mischief. You might find yourself saying what we do when something goes inexplicably wrong around the house, Must have been those darn fairies!

Your indoor planters are the ideal place to tuck and fairy or two. Pick one with a beautiful costume and you’ll brighten your foliage on the darkest winter day.

Teen agers can be the devil to buy for. If your teen ager is into fantasy art and literature, there are many stunning fairy figurines that they’ll love. You might even search for a fairy and unicorn figurine. One look at this style of figurine and your teen will start to imagine all sorts of quests for her favoite heroine.

Don’t worry if your teen is obsessed with fairy fantasy art. Well okay worry if she wants to dress like a fairy warrior to go to tenthy grade. But short of that, fairy artwork is truly beautiful. You might even be able to share her interest in art and go to a gallery or museum. It would be a great way to connect on her level!

Asian Travel eBooks: Amazon, Kindle and iPad

Posted in E Books by Nelson Axtell on September 18, 2011

Until recently I wasn’t at all a fan of Asian travel eBooks.  I spend most of my time in Asia, and travel books are an essential part of life when you don’t speak the language and you’re just trying to figure out what the hell is going on, but I just couldn’t get on board with eBooks.

Unfortunately, I damaged my back while lifting a heavy bag at Chiang Mai airport in Thailand,  and since then I’ve simply been unable to carry my usual huge collection of travel books with me around the world.

On the pleading of my doctor I bought myself an iPad and downloaded the Kindle app.  I then downloaded a couple of hundred Asian travel eBooks from Amazon – much more than my usual collection of about 20 Asian travel books (rest in piece).

I have to say that it’s a revelation.  I used to walk around with almost a broken spine because I insisted on carrying a crapload of travel books with me, but now I skip around happily with a light bag, iPad in hand with hundreds of thousands of words squeezed into the Asian travel eBooks on the hard drive.  I just love it.

I’ve decided never to go back to regular books.  Even if I had to stop travelling around Asia and return home to the UK I’m going to stick with my iPad and Kindle.  Asian travel books are just too darned convenient.

Halloween Coffin Props – Scary Halloween Decoration

Posted in Authors by Nelson Axtell on September 5, 2011

Halloween coffins are the perfect scary halloween decoration to make your trick-or-treaters tremble as they walk toward your front door! They are especially effective if you like to dress up as vampires in your family. These days everybody seems to be talking vampires. The teens and tweens are still into the Twilight series and their parents love the HBO series True Blood. So all the members of my family will be dressed in their version of vampire garb.

You can find coffins that fit into your outdoor Halloween decorations. I put these up the day before Halloween and put signs on them warning people that vampires are inside. For example, I might write Quiet, Vampire Sleeping or Do Not Disturb untill Halloween. Then on Halloween I open the coffins and change the signs to read Be Back Before Dawn. I love to have a sense of humor with my Halloween decorations as well. One year I took McDonald’s bags and put them near the coffin. I changed the contents to vials of pretend blood.

You’ll also find Halloween coffin prop jewelry. So you can decorate yourself as well as your yard. These make great Halloween party favors as well, if vampires are your theme.

Ideas for a Gift for a Special Person

Posted in Audiobooks by Allie Semones on September 4, 2011

We all have those special people in our lives that we treasure. When it’s time to celebrate their birthday or anniversary, we always want to find a special keepsake gift that they’ll treasure for many years. Sometimes it’s hard to find ideas for a gift, when you’ve given a person many gifts. But I think that a vintage figurine is always a wonderful gift idea for a friend.

First of all a vintage gift has a certain timeless quality about it. It might indeed remind an older person of a happy time in their life. Even a younger person will appreciate the artisanry and craftsmanship of a bygone time. And there are just fewer vintage pieces around, so you know there’s a good chance that your friend won’t receive another just like it! People who love antiques often love vintage figurines as well. More importantly for your budget, a vintage figurine can cost a fraction of what an antique figurine would sell for.

You can also tailer the gift of a vintage figurine to a person’s home decor. Those that love Asian decor will love receiving Vintage Chinese figurines. Anyone who adores traditional or country decor will enjoy adding a Vintage Rooster figurine to their home decor.

Victoria Clayton
How to enter the market at Monash University in "back door" Clayton?

I'm in year 11 and you want to get in finance, trade, economics at Monash University in Clayton Victoria Australia, but the score is 90 to enter – 96 and therefore very difficult to obtain. Sincerely, I do not think it would be able to achieve 90 + to enter so I was wondering if anyone knows how I can get in the way (perhaps by another and then make a transfer). If someone asked why not go to uni the other reason is that set my heart on this one.

If you have a high enough ENTER score for all BA Monash Clayton, for example, then it might be a foot in the door for you. Sign up for any BA or BSc and take all the courses that may relate to the economy, etc, or just the math, then be sure to get an average of less distinction in its first year. You should be able to transfer its importance especially in economics, etc. After successfully completing the first year of college in general will be very useful. I first enrolled engineering and could into a double degree eng / right after the first year with average credit only. There was no way you can enter in the law directly. It was about years now. Give it a try. In addition, contact the corresponding faculty of Monash and advice. They will be able to help you with your goals. Where there is a will there a path. Hope this helps.
